Preview your guide on different screens

Check how your guide looks on a phone, tablet and laptop, and fix the problems that only appear on small screens.

Updated

Guides adapt to the screen they are opened on, but that does not mean every guide reads equally well on every screen.

Test on a phone first

Most guests read guides on a phone. If you only check one device, make it that one.

Open your guide's link on your own phone rather than resizing a browser window. A real phone shows you the things that matter: how much fits before scrolling, whether text is comfortable, whether the cover image crops badly.

What tends to go wrong on small screens

  • Long paragraphs that looked fine on a laptop become walls of text
  • Cover images that crop awkwardly, cutting off the part that made the photograph worth using
  • Important information pushed below the fold, so guests never scroll to it
  • Pale colours that are unreadable outdoors in daylight

Check it in the conditions guests use it

A guest reads your guide standing outside with luggage, one-handed, on a phone at low brightness, sometimes in sunlight.

If you can, glance at your guide outdoors once. It is a surprisingly effective test.

Tablets and laptops

Guides work on larger screens too, and some guests will use them — particularly when planning before a trip. Content sits in a wider column, so nothing needs adjusting separately.

After any big change

Re-check on a phone after changing your cover image, colours or the order of your content. Those are the three changes most likely to look different on a small screen than they did while you were making them.
